From an epic Rugby World Cup hosted in Japan, to new competitions and milestones in development, the Rugby Americas North region has racked up an impressive list of accomplishments in 2019:
Development
- Level 1 Introducing Rugby course held in Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) for 14 Physical Education teachers as funded and supported by the TCI Rugby Union and the Ministry of Sport.
- Appointed Scott Harland as new Regional Training Manager (January) and appointed Erin Kennedy as new Regional Development Manager (March).
- Regional Development Manager, Erin Kennedy, made development visits in 2019 to Turks and Caicos (Level 1 Coaching), Bermuda (Caribbean Cup Final, Strategic Planning, Coaching Workshops), Curacao (Level 1 Coaching, Level 1 Officiating, Get Into Rugby Training, Coaching Sessions), and Belize (Level 1 Coaching and Meeting with Olympic Committee and Ministry of Sport), as well as events in Cayman Islands (Sevens Qualifier), San Diego (Match Commissioner Course), and Barbados (Women’s 10s and Men’s U19).
- World Rugby Activate training held in Calgary in August 2019 to train current RAN educators and trainers in Canada, USA, and RAN.

New members of regional association
- Belize made history by becoming the first member of Rugby Americas North from Central America when they were unanimously voted into Rugby Americas North at the 2019 Annual General Meeting in Miami. Belize Rugby joined RAN as an Associate Member.
- Dominican Republic officially recognized as a member of their Olympic Committee which provides a clear pathway for an application to become a Full Member of RAN and Associate Member of World Rugby
GIR and Participation
- RAN leads all regions in girls participation in Get Into Rugby/Rookie Rugby, at 48%.
- Rugby Canada’s Rookie Rugby program became nationally endorsed by Physical Health and Education Canada, the national governing body for education in Canada.
- As of the end of September, RAN has successfully reported the following participation information:
- 134,300 participants reported
- 69,500 Males
- 65,000 Females (48%)
- 2600 Trained Personnel
- 96% Total Participants compared with 2018
- 80% of Unions submitted at least one KPI report in 2019

Key highlights of year – including winners of tournaments
- USA Women’s Sevens Team win their first ever stop on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Biarritz, France to end the 2018-2019 season. They followed that up with a dominant performance in Glendale, CO at their home tournament to lift back-to-back trophies to open the 2019-2020 season.
- USA Men’s Sevens Team won their home stop on the World Series in Las Vegas, and ended the season with seven medal performances (1 Gold, 4 Silver, 2 Bronze)
- Canada Women’s Sevens won the Kitakyushu stop on the World Series.
- Mexico defeated USA Rugby South in both the Men’s Under-19 and Women’s 10s tournament in Barbados
- Jamaica and Mexico Men’s & Women’s teams will compete in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games global repechage for the final positions after qualifying at the 2019 RAN Sevens in Cayman Islands.
- Mexico Men’s Team picked up an exciting upset over Paraguay 35-27 to open the 2019 Americas Rugby Challenge. The win saw Mexico jump seven places in the official World Rugby rankings to their best ever 44th
- Canada women’s sevens team won the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Gold Medal, while USA finished with the silver medal.
- Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team won the silver medal at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru while USA won the Bronze Medal.
- Bermuda won the 2019 Rugby Americas North 15-a-side competition after defeating Guadeloupe 33-10 in September. NOTE: USA, Canada, Cayman and Mexico did not compete.
- Canada’s Men’s Sevens Team qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo by winning the 2019 Rugby Americas North Sevens tournament in Cayman Islands in July.
- USA Men’s & Women’s Sevens and Canada Women qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games by finishing in the top four at the end of the 2018-19 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
- Rugby Americas North held its first-ever RAN DHL Beach 5s Tournament in Hollywood Beach, Florida with 22 teams competing across Men’s, Women’s, Youth & High School divisions. USA Rugby successfully launched a series of beach rugby tournaments across the country.
- Canada & USA competed in the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan. Canada continues its streak of being at every Rugby World Cup dating back to the tournament’s beginning in 1987.
- Julianne Zussman makes the jump to the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series as a Match Official less than two years after retiring from Canada’s Women’s Team.
- Canada’s Alana Gattinger became the first-ever female manager at the Rugby World Cup.

- Facebook - 2,000 New LIKES in 2019
- Twitter - 500 new Followers in 2018
- Instagram - 1,000 new Followers in 2019
- Youtube - Our Youtube growth climbed in 2019, with 52K total views, and our highest viewed video being watched 8.4K times. The channel gained almost 400 new subscribers in 2019.
- Website – In 2019 Rugby Americas North launched its new website platform, with updated team, union & development information.
- Email - Currently we have about 1,125 subscribers to our newsletter and we aim to send them out quarterly.
- Bryan Kelly (former communication Manager at Rugby Canada) appointed RAN Communications Manager on June 1st with joint role with Rugby Americas
